Two-Way vs Three-Way Arbitrage (and the Tie Trap)

2026 · 6 min read

Not all arbitrage markets are built the same. The single most expensive mistake a beginner can make is arbing a two-way market in a sport that can end in a draw. It looks like a perfect surebet on paper, then a tie settles both of your bets as losers. Understanding this one distinction protects your whole bankroll.

Three-way markets

A three-way market has three possible results: home win, draw, away win. Football (soccer) is the classic example. To arb it, you cover all three outcomes — including the draw — so every possible result is backed. Because the draw is a selection you actually bet on, there is no hidden gap. Three-way arbs are always safe from the tie problem.

Two-way markets

A two-way market has only two selections: team A or team B, with no draw offered. Tennis, basketball and baseball moneylines are typical. Here you only place two bets, which is simpler and often cheaper. The danger is what happens if the match ends level.

The tie trap

In many two-way sports a draw is impossible — tennis always has a winner, basketball goes to overtime, an MLB game plays extra innings until someone wins. There, a two-way arb is completely safe.

But some sports can end level even on a two-way moneyline. In Korean (KBO) and Japanese (NPB) baseball, games can be declared a tie. American football, cricket and Aussie rules can end level too. If you arbed team A and team B and the game is a draw, both bets lose — you don't get your stake back, you lose the lot. One tie can wipe out the profit of a hundred good arbs.

Why "void" doesn't save you

Some bookmakers void a two-way bet on a tie and return your stake; others settle it as a loss. The rules differ from book to book. That inconsistency is the real danger: if one leg of your arb is voided and the other is settled as a loss, you are left with an open, unhedged position — exactly what arbitrage is supposed to prevent.

Which sports are safe for two-way arbs

As a rule, only take two-way arbs in sports with a guaranteed winner:

Safe: tennis, basketball (NBA, WNBA, EuroLeague), MLB and MiLB baseball, NHL ice hockey.
Avoid: KBO and NPB baseball, NFL and college football, cricket, Aussie rules — anything where a genuine tie is possible.

For everything else, stick to three-way markets where the draw is covered. A good scanner enforces this automatically — it only allows two-way arbs from tie-free sports and treats every other two-outcome market as unsafe.

The takeaway

Three-way arbs are always safe because the draw is a leg you bet on. Two-way arbs are only safe when the sport cannot tie. Learn the short list of tie-free sports, never take a two-way arb outside it, and the single most costly arbitrage mistake simply can't happen to you.
